Purpose of the role

The position's main purpose is to provide key legal services relating to disputes and litigation involving AMP's products and services.

Provide the AMP business units (Advice & Banking, Operations and Insurance and Superannuation) with legal advice, support and representation including in relation to:

  • AMP's regulatory response, compliance and governance functions
  • Litigation and dispute resolution arising from financial advice, insurance and remediation.

Legal and Governance forms part of the Group functions within AMP. The L&G team provides a comprehensive range of support services to all AMP business lines, through the AMP Legal teams, Group Secretariat and Trustee Services, and the management of outside legal counsel.

LDR is responsible for management of all major disputes and litigation across the AMP Group, including advice on complex claims and provides advice, support and training to various AMP business units.


  • Provide appropriate leadership and advice to the AMP business units consistent with business strategies and legislative/regulatory requirements
  • Identify and understand AMP's business strategies and priorities and provide appropriate and relevant legal advice. Also maintain awareness of key legal changes in the financial services industry through external networks and participation in relevant industry forums and committees
  • Share important advices and developments with the broader legal team within AMP and make changes where required
  • Manage external lawyers to ensure quality and cost effective service. Manage AMP's relationship with relevant external bodies where appropriate (e.g. FOS, SCT and ASIC)
  • Lead team of 3-5 lawyers within the LDR team.

Skills & experience

  • At least 10 years' relevant experience obtained either in-house or in private practice.
  • Solid financial services legal experience and working knowledge of the life insurance industry and regulatory regime
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and expertise in litigation and dispute management
  • Proven ability to manage clients and provide advice on significant litigation matters relating to regulatory response, compliance, governance, financial advice, insurance and remediation
  • Degree in Law
  • Must hold or be eligible to hold a relevant legal practising certificate in New South Wales.
